Age Of Empires 3: DE’s Latest DLC Adds “Casual-Friendly” Game Mode
The historic real-time strategy trio Age Of Empires III: Definitive Edition will see the arrival of a “casual-friendly” mode that shifts the focus from combat to economic success in its latest DLC pack, Knights Of The Mediterranean. Developers Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires have revealed that the DLC will also feature new Italian and Maltese civilizations, an allegiance-switching diplomacy mode, and a variation on random maps based on historical European wars.
Two new game modes make their debut in the Knights Of The Mediterranean DLC. “Tycoon” is the aforementioned new “casual-friendly” mode that emphasizes economic success for your empire rather than victory in battle. The developers say this will keep players from worrying about having to “reinforce armies or defend against large-scale sieges.” The other new mode is “Diplomacy,” which allows empires to swap allegiances in multiplayer and sounds pretty damn cool to me. The Knights Of The Mediterranean downloadable content also includes “historical maps” – randomly generated maps that are themed around conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars.
Italy and Malta are the two new major civilizations introduced in the Knights Of The Mediterranean DLC, both with their own unique units and buildings. Italy can build the Basilica, for example, while Malta has stationary cannons for long range combat. Nine new Royal House-themed Minor Civilizations such as Habsburg and Hanover are also added, each giving a unique ability and having more units and technologies than the other Minor Civilizations. You will also need to build a Trading Post on these Royal Houses to ally with them.
Age Of Empires III: Definitive Edition launched in 2020, reviving the 2005 original as part of Xbox Games Studios’ revamp of the Age Of Empires series. It’s since been superseded by Age Of Empires IV, which released last October, but it’s great to see developers Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires continue to support the game like this with new expansions.
The Knights Of The Mediterranean DLC for Age Of Empires III: Definitive Edition will be released on May 26 on Steam and will also be available on the Microsoft Store. It will cost you £8 / €9 / $10.
