App State Wins Gold Honor as Military Friendly School for 2022-2023

BOONE, NC — For the 13th consecutive year, Appalachian State University has received the Military Friendly® School designation from VIQTORY, recognizing its efforts to help military-affiliated students thrive on campus and in the surrounding community . App State was one of 29 U.S. schools in the large public school category to earn the Gold Honors designation for 2022-23.

Gold-winning schools were recognized for their best practices, results, and effective programs for military-affiliated students. The 2022-2023 list of military-friendly schools will be published in the May issue of GI Jobs magazine and can be viewed at www.militaryfriendly.com.

For this academic year, 384 military-affiliated students, including 289 student veterans and 95 active-duty military, are enrolled in App State.

Schools that achieved military-friendly school designation for 2022-2023 were evaluated based on the following six categories:

  • Student retention.
  • Graduation rate.
  • Access to employment.
  • Loan repayment.
  • Perseverance rate (advancement of diplomas).
  • Default rate.

To bolster its support for this student population, App State has created a new scholarship opportunity for veteran students — the GY6 Emergency Scholarship, Coffey shared.

This scholarship, made possible through the generosity of supporters of Student Veteran Services, provides assistance to student veterans in financial difficulty or in an emergency situation. Veteran students who are struggling can apply for GY6 emergency scholarship funds through App State’s Case Management Office.

According to Coffey, GY6 stands for “Got Your Six” – a military phrase meaning “I support you”.

“The name of the scholarship is designed to provide a sense of comfort for veteran App State students who may need it, and to be a point of pride for those who wish to support the fund,” Coffey explained.

Institutions that have achieved military-friendly designation were evaluated using public data sources and proprietary survey responses. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2022-2023 survey.

The Military Friendly Schools list is for military members and their families, helping them select the best college, university, or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

  • Dedicated Office of Admissions assistance for veterans and military service members who are considering enrolling in college.
  • Targeted orientation and counseling sessions for military-affiliated veterans and students.
  • The Career Development Center, which helps student veterans plan their careers and attend veteran preference programs.
  • The App State Student Veterans Association – an official chapter of the national Student Veterans of America organization that provides military veterans and their families with the resources, support, and advocacy needed to succeed at App State, and also raises awareness about the issues of veterans and promotes community service and volunteerism.
  • The Military Affairs Committee, which supports the success of students, staff, and faculty affiliated with the military by advocating for veterans, their dependents, and other members of the community affiliated with the military.
  • Scholarship opportunities specific to veteran students.
  • The GY6 Emergency Scholarship – provides assistance to student veterans in financial difficulty or in an emergency situation.

App State earned 6th place among major public schools receiving the Top 10 Military Friendly® Schools award for 2021-2022. This designation, awarded by VIQTORY, recognizes U.S. institutions of higher learning for their support and resources for student veterans and active duty military personnel. App State has been listed as one of the nation’s military-friendly schools for more than a decade.

Appalachian State University’s Veteran Student Services is dedicated to helping the university’s military-affiliated students thrive on campus and in the Boone community. To do this, the unit connects student veterans and military-affiliated students with services and resources that match their needs, abilities, and contributions.
