Attention parents: YouTube is launching a family app just for kids
Parents concerned about their kids watching explicit and inappropriate content on YouTube may want to check out Google’s latest offer today.
“This is the first step towards reinventing YouTube for families, but with your help, the app will continue to improve over time,” wrote Shimrit Ben-Yair, YouTube Kids group project manager.
The app offers family-friendly and kid-friendly content with four categories of playlists: shows, music, learning, and exploring. Content ranges from Sesame Street to math tutorials. Parents will have the option to activate a built-in timer and toggle search and sound settings.
YouTube has a safe mode and prohibits explicit sexual content on its main site, but the new app is designed to give parents peace of mind when their kids are browsing videos hosted on the Google-owned site. YouTube Kids is also much easier to navigate than the usual YouTube hub.
The idea of creating a video hub specifically for kids is similar to the backbone of Magicflix, a new Seattle startup that provides curated video service for kids with safe and age-appropriate content.
