OXFORD, Mississippi — University of Mississippi students and other members of the campus community have many opportunities to choose climate-friendly foods through the Cool Food Meals program launched this semester by Ole Miss Dining.

This program supports the university’s ongoing commitment to the environment and sustainability. Ole Miss Dining is operated under contract with Aramark Corp.

The Cool Food Meals badge, developed by the World Resources Institute, is featured on Aramark menus as part of a pilot project at 10 universities during the spring semester.

The Cool Food Meals badge identifies dishes with a low carbon footprint and will appear on over 350 menu items, including Kung Pao Cauliflower, Green Goddess Bowl, Southwestern Cereal Bowl, roasted corn and potatoes and the spiced egg toast with avocado.

“When asked if Ole Miss would like to join a pilot group for Cool Foods, I immediately responded, ‘Yes, sign us up,'” said Kathy Tidwell, Contract Services Manager and University Licensing Manager. “This gives us a chance to support our campus goal toward sustainability, sample new recipes, educate our students, and provide a better selection for our consumers who want to participate in making an impact on climate initiatives.”

This plate is an example of a meal made up of Cool Foods menu items that can be found at Ole Miss Dining restaurants on campus. Mediterranean stir-fry with orzo, cucumber caper relish and roast chicken are among more than 350 items on the Ole Miss Dining menu that meet low carbon footprint standards as measured by the World Resources Institute. The World Resources Institute measured the carbon footprint of hundreds of Aramark recipes to identify items that meet Cool Food Meals criteria, based on farm-to-fork ingredients and the land used to produce the meal.

If a dish’s carbon footprint falls below an established threshold per meal and meets a nutritional standard, it is approved as a fresh meal.

“We are thrilled to participate in the Cool Foods initiative and further strengthen our commitment to sustainability on campus,” said Chip Burr, District Manager for Ole Miss Dining.

“Information is a powerful tool. Whenever we can provide our students and faculty with the ability to make conscious decisions about their diet, it is transformative. »

Fresh meals can be found on campus at the Rebel Market and Residential College Market.

Ole Miss Dining aims to support the university’s Office of Sustainability in positive environmental change by educating, connecting and empowering members of the campus community, Burr said.

LAKE BOTTOM, Wis. – A health care system in Wisconsin is working to ease anxiety over vaccinations, especially among young children.

What do you want to know

  • Patients requiring accommodation for a COVID-19 vaccination could go to a sensory clinic in Fond du Lac
  • SSM Health and the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin hosted the clinic on Saturday
  • Patients received sensory agitations, distraction strategies, and other comfort items

SSM Health has partnered with the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin to host a COVID-19 sensory vaccination clinic on Saturday. The clinic at Center SSM Santé Treffert in Fond du Lac included sensory agitations, distraction strategies, and other accommodations to reduce stress during the appointment. Although autistic friendly, the clinic was open to anyone needing extra help during their vaccination.

“On our registration form, we left space and time to share accommodations that have helped them in the past,” said Meg Puddy, autism services manager at SSM Health Treffert Center. “What fears might they have regarding vaccination and any other advice or tips they might let us know to welcome them when they arrive and provide them with the necessary support.”

“We often hear that typical community events and rhythms often don’t work for them, they have different needs and challenges, so we’re so grateful to our partners who help build more inclusive spaces like this” , said Kirsten Cooper, Executive Director of the Autism Society of Greater Wisconsin.

Health workers administered doses of the Pfizer vaccine, approved for children five and older, as well as booster doses for children 12 and older. This gave participants more flexibility, support and patience when they received their injection.

“It’s not that hard to listen, to think about how we can support individuals differently and make vaccines more accessible through our medical and travel service providers,” Puddy added.

SSM Health staff estimate that 30 people were vaccinated at the clinic on Saturday. A follow-up clinic will take place on February 26, 2022 at the Treffert Center. The Treffert Center offers multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of autism and behavioral communication disorders in children and adults. You can read more about their work here.

The Autism Society of America helped make the clinic possible.

When you can’t leave Fido at home, here are five dog-friendly restaurants in the area for you to take him.

The Funky Brunch Cafe

The Funky Brunch Café is an experience like no other. You can make your own pancakes indoors or enjoy the brightly colored decor sitting outside on the spacious terrace.

Precious Hutchens, the manager of Funky Brunch Café, said the cafe loves having guests of all kinds, whether human or not.

“We love dogs here. Everyone on staff loves dogs,” Hutchens said.

Dogs will receive their own bowls and treats when they visit the cafe.

The Funky Brunch Café is a popular spot for visitors and Savannah locals alike, so their wait times are often longer than other locations. Hutchens says the coffee is worth it despite the long weekend wait times.

“As soon as you sit down, everything else after that is fast,” Hutchens said. “Food comes out fast and hot.”

Most cafe meals will set you back less than $15. You can choose to cook the pancakes yourself or you can ask the cafe staff to do it for you in the kitchen.

“It’s home cooking. It’s a decent price, and it’s a decent portion for what you pay,” Hutchens said.

The cafe’s opening hours are 8 am to 2:30 pm daily except Tuesdays when it is closed. You can check out the Funky Brunch Café menu on their website here.

Moon River Brewery

Moon River Brewing Company has a 5,4000 square foot beer garden which was opened in 2013. This area is dog friendly and offers plenty of space for your canine companion and all your friends.

Moon River Brewing Company has been serving beer and burgers since 1999. They also offer sandwiches, wings, and nachos along with plenty of drink options. Their website states that they pride themselves on providing a comfortable and relaxing environment, serving a delicious variety of freshly prepared foods, and being passionate about serving great beer.

They are also affordable. You can expect to pay around $12 for your meal.

The brasserie and the restaurant are open from noon to 10 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday. They are open from 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

They are located at 21 West Bay Street and their website can be found here. You can check out their Bring Fido reviews here.

fluffy mushroom

The newly reopened Mellow Mushroom on West Liberty Street is the perfect place for you and your dog to enjoy some quality pizza. It’s also a great place to have a little fun according to Anthony Sevigny.

Sevigny, the restaurant’s general manager, wants the community to know that his goal is to have a place where Savannah residents feel free to come and have a good time, including four-legged locals.

“We’re fun people,” Sevigny said. “We want people to have fun coming here and having fun working here.”

At Mellow Mushroom, customers can expect their pet to receive fresh water in their own bowl and in a welcoming environment. The restaurant has five outdoor tables that can seat around 20 people in total.

“I have no problem with people loading up the patio with dogs,” Sevigny said. “I like dogs.”

According to Sevigny, the restaurant’s goal is to integrate into the Savannah community. They do this by serving beer from as many local distilleries as possible. These distilleries include Ghost Coast, Southbound, Creature Comforts, Two Tides, and New Realm, all located in the Savannah area.

Mellow Mushroom is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. They are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. You can check their website for a menu here.

J. Christopher’s

You and your dog can enjoy the cool fall weather in J. Christopher’s outdoor seating. In addition to breakfast sandwiches and bites, this restaurant offers its own dog menu. Let your dog set up with his very own “Puppy Chow” bowl to enjoy while you eat your meal.

J. Christophers is a locally owned and operated restaurant in downtown Savannah. Their menu is filled with breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes that are sure to please. Try the “Billy Goat” omelets or the fresh fruit cornucopia while you’re there.

J. Christopher’s is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day of the week. You should expect to spend around $10-$15 per person for your meal. The restaurant is located at 122 E Liberty Street and their website can be found here. You can check out their Bring Fido reviews here.

Flying fish bass and grills

Located on Wilmington Island, The Flying Fish Bar and Grill is a 15-minute drive from downtown Savannah and minutes from Tybee Island. If you and your dog have hiked the trails and are looking for a place to sit and enjoy a meal, this is the place to go.

Launched in 2007 by Mike McMahon, this restaurant which was originally called “The Fish” serves fresh caught seafood in addition to burgers, wings and chicken tenderloins.

“We’ve grown from just a few employees to about 70,” McMahon said in an interview Wednesday. His restaurant has experienced significant growth over the past few years.

The owner of the family bar and grill said there were a lot of pets that came to Flying Fish. With a large outdoor seating area, you’ll never have to worry about not having enough space.

“We had a guy coming with an iguana.” McMahon said. While there’s not much a restaurant can offer an iguana, McMahon said all dogs are served their own owl of ice water upon entering.

You can find the hours and menu of Flying Fish Bar and Grill on their website here.
