At the entrance to the Zoo, it may not seem like much, but the Zoo is 22 hectares and represents 750 different species! To make navigating the zoo easier for repeat or new visitors, signs are posted around the zoo. The zoo also has access ramps for strollers and wheelchairs.

There is also a San Antonio Zoo app that you can download to your phone, with animal information, a GPS map, and ticket information. There’s also free Wi-Fi, so you’re never disconnected from friends, family, or posting about your day at the zoo on social media.

Wondering what experiences you can have at the Zoo? In addition to enjoying a 36-acre walking trail lined with animals in their habitats and structures that transport you to nature, there are also several interactive experiences.

SA Zoo Giraffe Feeding

Get up close to giraffes during this interactive feeding experience. Before your experience, you’ll get instructions on how to feed them safely and learn fun facts about these big and friendly creatures. The giraffe pictured above is named Cosmo – it’s a picky eater, so you may be given another green plant instead of lettuce.

South African Zoo Train

Take a break from walking and take a ride on the Zoo train! The San Antonio Zoo Train is approximately 2 miles long and takes visitors around Brackenridge Park, located near the zoo.

Kangaroo Krossing is a relatively new experience at the zoo. This experience is home to the Red Kangaroos and is part of Australia’s Wild Kingdom. Tickets to Kangaroo Krossing are currently $8 for a closer encounter.

Five local tips for making the most of your visit to the zoo

1. Bring quarters

Throughout the zoo, there are several stations filled with fish food. It only costs a quarter to get a handful of food to feed them! No doubt these mini-stops add to the zoo experience.

2. San Antonio Zoo parking lot

In addition to the open ground, the SA zoo now has a parking lot. You can park for the zoo directly near the entrance in the open ground or inside the zoo garage during zoo opening hours free of charge!

3. Plan an early visit

Enjoy a less crowded zoo by planning your visit early. An early visit allows you time to take photos and provides cooler walking time.

4. Take breaks

If an early visit isn’t possible, don’t worry – although you might break a sweat, after all, the zoo is 36 acres. The long path is shaded in places and some exhibits are closed, but it’s important to take breaks and stay hydrated. Benches are located along the trail and concessions for necessary breaks.
