Juventus-Atlético de Madrid friendly canceled due to violent clashes

After the Soccer Champions Tour in the United States and the Villar Perosa event, Juventus still had a friendly match to play in their pre-season.

The Bianconeri were due to meet Atletico Madrid in Tel Aviv on Sunday night in a battle between two clubs that have become recurring opponents in the Champions League.

The Old Lady have already faced the other two big La Liga clubs in the United States, recording a 2-2 draw with Barcelona before succumbing to a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid.

Earlier this morning, the Mundo Deportivo (Going through Calciomercato) reported that the meeting between Juventus and the Spaniards was in danger of being canceled due to last night’s deadly events in the Gaza Strip.

As the report explains, violent clashes in Israel resumed Friday night, with 160 rockets and 30 airstrikes launched between warring armed forces, killing 11 in Gaza. Thus, the match could be canceled for security reasons.

Nevertheless, event organizer Dani Benhaim (the managing director of the Comtec company) assured that there is no change in the plans at the moment, with both teams continuing with their preparations according to schedule.

Still, Juve’s official website later confirmed the cancellation, while promising ticket holders to refund them within 14 days.
