Súper Clásico friendly match – Chivas vs Club América – in Atlanta on September 25
With 35 titless in all competitions (a record thirteen league titles, as well as a record six Copa México titles and six Campeón de Campeones Cups, as well as ten club trophies recognized by FIFA) Club America is the most successful club in the country and ‘Las Aguilas is one of the two most supported clubs in Mexico (along with Chivas Guadalajara) and the only team in the country never to have been relegated.
“I’m not afraid to say it, because it’s the reality. You can compare what Real Madrid is in Spain with what America is in Mexico,” said 37-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa this summer as he did his part to promote the pre-season friendly clash between the European champions and the Mexican giants.
Club Deportivo Guadalajara aka Chivas is the other major force in Mexican football with the team having a large number of fans not only in Mexico but also in the United States. A unique feature of the club is the policy of using only Mexican players, a measure not dissimilar to Athletic Club in LaLiga with their ‘Basque only’ policy and this attribute resonates with many many Mexicans.
September Super Clasico double header
The two teams will play each other twice in September, with the first meeting scheduled to take place at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on September 18 as part of the 2022 Liga MX Apertura with both teams destined to participate in the post-season liguilla.
The next meeting of the Mexican giants will be a week later, but this contest will take place in the United States. The 55,000 capacity Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta (home of Georgia Tech) will be packed as fans of both clubs in the United States will be eager to see their heroes up close.
The game will be the fourth time that promoter Primetime Sports has staged a Super Clasico in the The United States with Los Angeles, Dallas and Chicago previously hosted the games.
