Are you ready to let your competitive spirit out? Do you want to meet other enthusiasts for a friendly and exciting competition? Getting competitive might just be what you need to find your staff and place yourself on campus.

There are many opportunities for you to get involved and find organizations that match your interests. Here are a few if you like to win and compete.

Visit and play The Connection

There are different ways to take on other buffs, especially if you like video games, tabletop games, and even board games!

The Connection is CU Boulder’s entertainment hub. Located on the first floor of UMC, this hotspot is your go-to spot for plenty of competitive activities. Challenge your friends during quiz nights; bowling, table tennis and video game tournaments; and more. You can also check out the board games at reception to fuel your competitive spirit.

Compete with others through sport

Do you like to exercise for fun? Intramural (IM) sports is the perfect opportunity for you. IM Sports gives you the chance to connect to campus, meet other enthusiasts, and participate in a variety of sports and activities. IM sports are open to students, faculty and staff. You can create a team with friends or sign up as a free agent, however you choose to play, there’s something for everyone. Purchase an IM Sports Pass to play in leagues and tournaments throughout the semester.

Make money with sustainable ideas

The Sustainable Solutions Challenge is a campus-wide competition to help move CU Boulder toward a sustainable, carbon-neutral future. Compete individually or as a team to present your creative ideas. The best part about it – the winning proposal will receive $1,500, while a runner-up and an audience favorite will each receive $500.

The prize money is funded by the Office of the UC President. Plus, your idea will be considered for implementation on the CU Boulder campus!

In addition to entering the contest, there will also be a showcase on April 21 where you can pitch your idea and be eligible to win a round of $25,000 in MIssion Zero Fund prizes at CU Boulder.

To learn more about how to get involved, why to participate and important dates, find out how to participate in the Sustainable Solutions Challenge.

Find what interests you

Contact your professors and ask if there are any opportunities for you to compete in areas related to your major. Whatever your interests, there will be something to suit you.

It takes time to find your niche, but BuffConnect can make it easier for you. BuffConnect is CU’s student club portal. There are over 500 student organizations and the list is organized by category to help you find organizations or a club that matches your interests. Start by searching for groups in the recreation and wellness, social, or sports club categories.

Attend events

As the old saying goes, “a little competition never hurt anyone”. Attending events is your chance to meet people who share your interests and to try new things. Be on the lookout for activities you can participate in to put your competitive skills to the test!

Try things on your own

If you want to create your own competitive games with your friends, here are some suggestions to try and have a good time.

  • Organize a relay race with your friends. Set your goal to race in Norlin Quad or Farrand Field and see who wins.

  • Play a board game – you can try one at your residence’s community center or at The Connection.

  • Gather some friends and try an escape room.

  • Challenge a friend to a one-on-one game of HORSE.

  • Create a treasure hunt.

  • Sign up for a bike or run race.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — As another Christmas approaches with COVID-19, you might struggle to find things to do with your household that don’t involve leaving the house. To help you out, here are some fun, COVID-friendly Christmas activities you can do without leaving the house.

Make and decorate Christmas cookies

Christmas cookies are a holiday staple. Whether it’s sugar cookies or gingerbread cookies, they’re always a delight to bake, decorate and snack on all holiday long. That’s what makes it such a good choice for a Christmas activity.

Not only is the process of making the cookie from scratch fun, but you can also get in touch with your creative side while decorating it.

Play a board game

Tabletop games will never go out of style and there are so many options for those looking to play with their family, even in groups of two.

If you already have games, great. If you don’t, there’s still time to head to your local game store to pick up a new one for your family to enjoy.

To see some recommended games for the holiday season, check out the link here.

Try new recipes

Cooking together can be a bonding experience for many. Why not turn your classic Christmas dish into something new?

If you and your friends are always making a Christmas ham, why not replace it with something you’ve never had before? If your family is used to chicken and turkey, try a vegetarian dish.

The options are endless, but if you need new ideas, here is a link to some not-so-average Christmas meals to give it a shot.

The website’s list of “I Just Make Sandwiches” includes recipes for two, vegetarian/vegan options, and even unique ways to cook holiday classics like turkey and ham. So even if you’re not ready to part with your chickens, you can still do something exciting and new.

Christmas Movie Marathon

Every person who celebrates Christmas — and even those who don’t — has a holiday movie they love.

Give your friends and/or family the chance to choose their favorite movies and take part in a Christmas movie marathon. This is an option that does not require much preparation.

All you have to do is put on the movies and relax with a cup of hot chocolate.

Build a gingerbread house

A Christmas classic you may have forgotten, this year is the year to pick up the tradition if you haven’t already.

Gingerbread houses are a great way for people to come together and create something special. Although they don’t last forever, they can also be a fun post-Christmas treat.

Looking for ideas to decorate your gingerbread house? You can check the link here for some decorating ideas. Some of them are a little complicated, but it will be a great challenge for older children and adults.

Decorate your own ugly Christmas sweaters

The ugly Christmas sweater trend is fairly recent, but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

If you’re looking for something to do that’s COVID-friendly, this is definitely something you can do at home. You’ve just grabbed the tools and crafts you have, an old sweater, and some Christmas spirit.

After decorating them, why not take a picture of you and the rest of your household wearing your new Christmas outfit?

For sweater decorating ideas, check out this gallery from the “Good Housekeeping” website by clicking the link here.

Pay a virtual visit to Santa Claus

Although it’s very busy this time of year, Santa Claus can make sure to make time for you and the rest of the family.

There are several sites where you can book a visit from Santa Claus. It’s the priciest thing on our list, but also one of the most exciting for those with young children.

There are many websites you can use to schedule a virtual tour with Santa Claus with prices starting at $24.95 for one and $64.99 for another. Be sure to shop around before deciding which service to use, as some services offer more personalized tours with Santa than others.

Read Christmas stories

With technology making books available at the click of a button, now is the perfect time to start the tradition of reading with the rest of your household on Christmas Day.

In the digital age, there are a plethora of free stories to choose from online. But if you’re having trouble finding it, here is a link to a compilation from the “iMOM” website with 10 Christmas stories to choose from.

Play Christmas “Guess who?”

This game idea from the Kid Friendly Things to Do website is a cute way to spend time together this Christmas.

It follows the same rules as the original “Guess Who”, but now players guess holiday-themed things. (Think Angels, Grinch, etc.)

The game tutorial is on the website where you can find a link to here.

Make decorations together

If you have room on your Christmas tree, here is an activity that will leave you with fond memories for years to come. Instead of filling your whole tree with store-bought decorations, why not make a little room for the ones you made with your family and friends.

Ornaments can be made from so many things – the options are truly endless. Right here is a link to a list of ornaments by the “Hands On As We Grow” blog that you can make at home this year with everyone in your household.

Hi Sara!

I’m trying to find a gift for my mom for Christmas, and I love the idea of giving a gift for climate action. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you for your time

– Laura

Hi Laura,

Sure thing. Here is a list of ecological gift ideas for all budgets.

A board game, puzzle, houseplant, or other item from your local “Don’t Buy Anything” group (Price: free)

Why is it climate friendly: Manufacturing products requires consumption of energy and natural resources, so it is better for the climate to reuse the products rather than buy new ones. The Buy Nothing Project, a gift network created by two women in Washington state in 2013, encourages neighbors to freely share goods and services with each other. The project’s “Holiday Challenge” encourages participants to donate (and request) used items that can be reused as gifts. To join, download the free group app or search for a group near you on Facebook.

Another option: a treasure from your local thrift store

A “voucher” promising to help the beneficiary take climate action (Price: free)

Why it’s climate friendly: With a voucher, you are giving a gift of your time. You can promise to write letters to elected officials on behalf of the recipient, teach them about plant-based cooking, or help the recipient install weather stripping. The voucher is tailored to the recipient’s interests and your skills, making it a one-of-a-kind gift.

Renewable energy credits (Price: $)

Why they’re climate-friendly: About a quarter of carbon pollution in the United States comes from power plants that burn natural gas and coal to generate electricity. With renewable energy credits, you can offer your loved ones electricity produced from wind, solar or other renewable sources. For about $ 5 per month, your friends or family members will be entitled to call themselves “100% powered by clean electricity”.

Where to buy: through services such as Arcadia Power or other groups certified by the non-profit group Green-e

Caveat: As David Roberts explains in this Vox column, it’s not clear that renewable energy credits create incentives for additional renewable energy facilities to come online. Yet purchasing credits helps demonstrate demand for clean electrical products.

Kit Narcissus Paperwhite (Price: $)

Why they’re climate-friendly: Your friends and family will feel connected to nature even in winter when they grow these fragrant indoor flowers. To make white paper narcissus kits, purchase inexpensive light bulbs at a hardware store or garden center, salvaged glass vases or jars, and small pebbles. Recipients will place the bulbs on the pebbles inside the vases, add water, then wait four to six weeks for the flowers to emerge.

Climate disaster pack (Price: $)

Why It’s Climate Friendly: This 30-card expansion of the popular ‘Cards Against Humanity’ game is sure to get your friends talking about climate change. As I explained, most people don’t have enough conversations about the problem.

Bonus: The creator of the game is offering a discount if you live in an area that is on track to experience heat waves, hurricanes, droughts, downpours or rising seas.

Compost bucket (Price: $$)

Why it’s climate friendly: The perfect gift for the person with a green thumb. Inside landfills, decomposing food scraps release methane, a powerful heat-trapping gas. But composting turns food waste into a rich fertilizer popular with gardeners.

A book on climate solutions (Price: $$)

Why it’s climate friendly: The topic of climate change can make people sad, scared, and outraged, and so it’s important to remember that many people are working hard to fix the problem. Help your network members better understand the possible solutions with a selection from this list by Michael Svoboda, Yale Climate Connections contributor.

Bonus Recommendation: “The Nature of Oaks,” by Douglas W. Tallamy

A sweater, slippers, socks or a blanket (Price: $$)

Why it’s eco-friendly: Nestled inside a cozy fabric, your loved ones will stay warm even if they turn down the thermostat. Not only will they reduce carbon pollution, but they will save money on home heating costs, which are expected to skyrocket this winter.

A bike (Price: $$$)

Why it’s climate friendly: Transportation is the biggest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Replacing gas-guzzling car trips with a ride on two wheels can help. If you can afford it, consider an electric bike for the rider in your life. According to recent research, urban e-bike owners tend to use them as a replacement for car trips.

Readers, what other climate-friendly gifts should I add to this list? Send your suggestions to sara@yaleclimateconnections.org.

Bonus tip: To avoid creating mountains of wrapping paper waste, present your gifts in reusable paper or fabric gift bags – then, like the women in this Saturday Night Live skit, make sure they do. get used to it year after year.

A question about climate change? Send it to sara@yaleclimateconnections.org. Questions can be edited for length and clarity.

As Father’s Day approaches, you want to show the dad or father figure in your life how much they mean to you. As the chance to celebrate your dad, in person or virtually, draws closer, now is the right time to find a gift that helps them relax or that matches their interests. Your grandpa might want to dive into a book on the beach this summer, or upgrade his headphones to listen to music on walks. Maybe your dad picked up a new hobby like sewing or drinking tea during the pandemic.

If your dad is someone who wears cologne, you might consider giving him a nice bottle that can remind him of your personality every day. And while you want to make sure your giveaway shows how well you know your dad, you don’t have to break the bank in the process. We wanted to share a list of 12 affordable Father’s Day gifts to consider, ranging from a craft cocktail kit to a coat for keeping your drinks cool to a chic dog tie.

The best cheap gifts for Father’s Day

Pilot Metropolitan Collection Fountain Pen

Classics are always in fashion. Treat your dad to a Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen, a sleek black writing instrument with a medium nib. The pen comes with a dozen black ink refills. Pair it with a bullet journal to help your pop tackle their next project.

O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream

A little personal care can go a long way. O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream can help your dad keep his skin from drying out. The hand moisturizer, originally designed for breeder Bill O’Keeffe by his daughter Tara, will provide a layer of protection to his knuckles, cuticles and finger joints. You can also find it in a three-pack.

Bear Paw Crusher Claws

Give your pre-dinner grill-loving dad a hand with Bear Paws Shredder Claws. It can grab the heat-resistant handles without gloves, use the sharp teeth to shred a pork belly or shoulder, then move it all to a serving platter. When it’s finished, the claws can be rinsed and put in the dishwasher.

Cold beer coats

Just like your dad always told you, “bundle you up there”, now you can make sure his cans stay chilled this summer with Cold Beer Coats. The little down jacket zipped up and down will keep your beer cool and your hands dry. There is also a slim can parka option if he is a soda water or soda water drinker.

W&P Craft Cocktail Bag

Convenience meets cocktails with the W&P Craft Cocktail Kit. The Old Fashioned kit – just add bourbon – contains demerara sugar, bitters, a bar spoon and pestle, and a pair of linen coasters for two drinks. There are also kits for making gin and tonic, hot grog, margarita, Moscow Mule or Bloody Mary.

Multi-tool for Gentlemen’s Hardware Key

If you need the right tool for the right job, imagine how much work your dad can do with the Gentlemen’s Hardware Key Multi-Tool. The stainless steel tool is actually 14 tools in one; but it still fits easily on his key ring. It can be used as a ruler, screwdriver, nail pliers, can opener and bottle opener.

Minimalist National Park Playing Cards

When hanging out with dads, a card game or board game can burst at any time. Minimalist National Park playing cards have modern and original artwork of national parks on each card and are laminated to prevent ends from bending and water from ruining the cards. This pack could inspire your next family road trip.

Baxter of California Daily Facial Cleanser

Help your dad start each day feeling refreshed with Baxter of California Daily Facial Cleanser. The foaming cleanser is fragrance and paraben free, so it should be gentle on many different skin types. It can also be used as part of a beard grooming routine or you get a beard wash or beard oil dedicated to your dad.

Shower vapors with essential oils

After the last year of the pandemic, your dad probably wants to take deep breaths and relax. Essential oil shower sprays are a form of aromatherapy, releasing scents when placed in hot water. The three-disc set includes Stress Relief (scents of eucalyptus, lemon, orange), Wake Up (spearmint and citrus) and Sleep Tight (lavender).

AeroPress Go

Let your dad DIY his morning cup of coffee with the AeroPress Go. This portable coffee press has a built-in cup and lid, so it works on a kitchen counter or on a campsite. The Aeropress Go can brew hot or cold coffee, comes with a scoop for pre-measuring coffee grounds, and the included filters keep those grounds out of your cup of coffee.

Original Tuft & Needle Foam Pillow

For many people, it has been difficult to sleep well due to stress at work or in life this year. The Tuft & Needle Original Foam Pillow can make your dad cooler at night and hopefully help him rest more easily. The pillow, which has a washable cover, is made of graphite and cooling gel to wick heat away from her head. The foam provides support while allowing the pillow to adapt to the shape of his head and neck.

Choose your dog breed Tie

As long as humanity celebrated Father’s Day, someone received a tie. Add a little whimsy to tradition with the Choose Your Dog Breed Tie. The tie, choose one of 17 repeating dog patterns like a chihuahua or corgi, is 100 percent silk.

Clubhouse games

Key art of clubhouse games

Classic board game roundups in a video game aren’t the rarest thing in the world. However, Clubhouse Games does everything very well. Bringing together 51 classic games in one package, Clubhouse Games makes it easy to start a family game without having to try to find and set up the physical board themselves. These Switch family games can be played locally in handheld mode with the touchscreen, or in docked mode with controllers. Best of all, if someone else owns the collection, you can connect to online multiplayer quickly and easily!

Do you know what is great about Clubhouse games? It forgoes the typical Switch game price of $ 60 and has an MSRP of $ 40. With so many games on offer, it’s excellent value for money!

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

I hate having such a heavy Mario roster, but you can’t deny that Mario titles are great for kids and adults alike. The recently ported Super Mario 3D World is a fantastic title in general – the former Wii U console star, even. He’s also a family friend as up to 4 players can come in and out at any time and have a blast across the world! The addition of Bowser’s Fury also gives game veterans more content to enjoy and a rationale for another purchase.

Kirby Star Allies

Are you looking for something that even the youngest in your family can enjoy? Then you can’t go wrong with Kirby Star Allies. Every Kirby game has a little gadget to go with it, and this Switch title’s gadget is having up to three former enemies or allies accompanying Kirby on his quest to save Popstar and the universe (again). The title is designed for walk-in multiplayer, and the mix-and-match style of the power-ups is delicious. Plus, you don’t lose a life unless Kirby himself dies, meaning the younger ones can take control of any of the allies and just have fun without fear of failing.

Who doesn’t like Kirby? You and up to three other people can enjoy this platform game. Mix and match powers, and even the youngest can have fun controlling their allies without fear of losing lives.

Lego city undercover

LEGO games are fun to play. They simply are! I’ve enjoyed the wacky humor and stress-free gameplay of LEGO games for years now. Even though they sometimes feel the same, it really doesn’t hurt to add at least one LEGO title to your collection. LEGO City Undercover is one of the titles that is not based on a popular franchise, so anyone can have fun with this title without needing to get the references. Really, however, any LEGO game you start with is a hit with kids and adults alike.

    Lego city undercover
You can’t go wrong with LEGO! Whichever title you choose, you’ll have a silly, stress-free time.

Minecraft

Sometimes you just can’t beat one of the most popular games around. Minecraft allows everyone to explore their creativity with the ability to create anything you can dream of, if you have the resources. Those more inclined to explore can embark on the randomly generated world, searching for treasures and Creepers while working through the minimalist story. Set up a multiplayer server and your whole family can share, build and explore the same world together. You don’t even have to be all online at the same time to participate in the fun Switch family game!

Minecraft is available on all modern consoles, and most of them are cross-play as well. You don’t need everyone to have a Switch to enjoy it.

    Minecraft
Minecraft is one of the most popular games for a reason. Build, explore and more together, and even enjoy multiplayer with your friends and family on other consoles!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ultimate Super Smash Bros. Art.

If you’re looking for a title for your family to compete against, you can’t go wrong with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The fighting game has simple entries that anyone can master, and the ever growing roster of characters ensures that you will find a character that matches your playstyle. You can also introduce handicaps into the match so that players more experienced do not constantly beat the competition, which makes it fun for the whole family.

    Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Everyone is there and everyone wants to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Choose from over 70 fighters and face up to eight players.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 art

Puzzle games are timeless and SEGA has managed to crush two popular titles into a fun multiplayer title! While there is a story mode, you won’t miss much as you advance to the second title in this mash-up series. With a bunch of crazy modes and choosing whether you want to use Tetris blocks, Puyo blobs or both, everyone is sure to have a good time.

    Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Tetris and Puyo Puyo come together in this wild puzzle title! With plenty of multiplayer modes and ways to play, this will be a great family game on Switch.

Confused about which Switch family game to choose after going through our list? At $ 40, Clubhouse games offers incredible value and features classic board games that everyone will recognize. It’s also surprisingly fun for what you get – you wouldn’t think a board game collection would be so endearing! If you’re looking for something a little more action-packed then Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is sure to please everyone!

that of Microsoft Xbox Game Pass The service offers over 100 games for subscribers to try out, which includes a wide range of titles. Microsoft categorizes games into specific sections, allowing users to find the type of game they want to play at that time. One of those categories is Family Friendly, which offers a variety of Xbox Game Pass titles that can be played by the whole family due to a general lack of violent or inappropriate content.

It’s unclear whether Microsoft will ever go ahead with rumored Xbox Game Pass family plans or not, but regardless, there are still plenty of Family Friendly games available on the service. Game sharing means it’s possible for families to play these games together on separate Xbox consoles while paying only for a single Game Pass account, and many Family Friendly games also support multiplayer options and local cooperatives.
