Spread some green cheer this Christmas with these eco-friendly gifts

Posted on December 23, 2021

Extreme weather events and climate change are intertwined, and as Mother Earth sends us distress signals, it’s time to listen to her and understand how we are contributing to the condition of the planet.

As we prepare to celebrate the end of one year and the start of another, perhaps we can find sustainable gift options to start with that are more budget friendly than environmentally friendly..

Here are some green options that we have selected for you.

1. Ecological greeting cards – If you think electronic greeting cards are impersonal, why not browse some recycled paper craft cards? Trust us, there are many sources from where you can buy greeting cards made by folk artists and even cards with embedded seeds or pressed flowers which are not only beautiful but also made from sustainable way. You can also make your own using wood blocks, non-toxic markers, printing on recycled paper, or just recycling old cards. Do-it-yourselfers can also recycle paper by making papier-mâché items and using gift wrap to make cutout keepsakes.

2. Greet with trees! : Why not give a gift that keeps on giving? Grow-Trees.com is a social organization dedicated to expanding green coverage and protecting wildlife habitats through reforestation campaigns that engage and benefit local communities. A big part of this initiative is the involvement of businesses and individuals. This Christmas, you too can make a donation or offer trees to greet a loved one, because after all, what better than to offer a tree or several to make a corner of the earth a little greener? Grow-Trees.com will convey your greetings via an eTreeCertificate ™ and you can also gift trees to multiple people at once via this cost effective web service.

3. Organic bath / beauty products – Fruity bath bombs, aromatic oils, handmade soaps, delicious body scrubs, face masks, skin nourishing butter don’t have to be expensive or mixed with chemicals. Look for bath and beauty products made by companies dedicated to environmentally friendly, cruelty-free, and organic processes. Create your own gift basket with handpicked organic treats that delight both those who give them and those who receive them.

4. Reusable grocery bags – Many specialty sellers are now making reusable grocery bags that are very stylish, have witty messages, and can add a stylish punchline to routine shopping chores. Removing single-use plastics from everyday use is a big step towards a sustainable lifestyle and a brief online search will reveal several sites that now make bags from recycled fabrics like denim, quilted cotton and jute. .

5. Organic gourmet baskets – From farm-to-table restaurants to healthy snacks without sugar or oil, organic foods are now part of the diet of nearly everyone who is health conscious. This holiday season, gift a basket of green tea, a basket of local fruit, or shop at organic stores to hand-pick things that will be loved by a loved one. You can also order treats from vegan bakers or get special treats like pickles and jams, bread and cookies from home cooks, and organize a personalized and thoughtful gift in every way.

Hi Sara!

I’m trying to find a gift for my mom for Christmas, and I love the idea of giving a gift for climate action. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you for your time

– Laura

Hi Laura,

Sure thing. Here is a list of ecological gift ideas for all budgets.

A board game, puzzle, houseplant, or other item from your local “Don’t Buy Anything” group (Price: free)

Why is it climate friendly: Manufacturing products requires consumption of energy and natural resources, so it is better for the climate to reuse the products rather than buy new ones. The Buy Nothing Project, a gift network created by two women in Washington state in 2013, encourages neighbors to freely share goods and services with each other. The project’s “Holiday Challenge” encourages participants to donate (and request) used items that can be reused as gifts. To join, download the free group app or search for a group near you on Facebook.

Another option: a treasure from your local thrift store

A “voucher” promising to help the beneficiary take climate action (Price: free)

Why it’s climate friendly: With a voucher, you are giving a gift of your time. You can promise to write letters to elected officials on behalf of the recipient, teach them about plant-based cooking, or help the recipient install weather stripping. The voucher is tailored to the recipient’s interests and your skills, making it a one-of-a-kind gift.

Renewable energy credits (Price: $)

Why they’re climate-friendly: About a quarter of carbon pollution in the United States comes from power plants that burn natural gas and coal to generate electricity. With renewable energy credits, you can offer your loved ones electricity produced from wind, solar or other renewable sources. For about $ 5 per month, your friends or family members will be entitled to call themselves “100% powered by clean electricity”.

Where to buy: through services such as Arcadia Power or other groups certified by the non-profit group Green-e

Caveat: As David Roberts explains in this Vox column, it’s not clear that renewable energy credits create incentives for additional renewable energy facilities to come online. Yet purchasing credits helps demonstrate demand for clean electrical products.

Kit Narcissus Paperwhite (Price: $)

Why they’re climate-friendly: Your friends and family will feel connected to nature even in winter when they grow these fragrant indoor flowers. To make white paper narcissus kits, purchase inexpensive light bulbs at a hardware store or garden center, salvaged glass vases or jars, and small pebbles. Recipients will place the bulbs on the pebbles inside the vases, add water, then wait four to six weeks for the flowers to emerge.

Climate disaster pack (Price: $)

Why It’s Climate Friendly: This 30-card expansion of the popular ‘Cards Against Humanity’ game is sure to get your friends talking about climate change. As I explained, most people don’t have enough conversations about the problem.

Bonus: The creator of the game is offering a discount if you live in an area that is on track to experience heat waves, hurricanes, droughts, downpours or rising seas.

Compost bucket (Price: $$)

Why it’s climate friendly: The perfect gift for the person with a green thumb. Inside landfills, decomposing food scraps release methane, a powerful heat-trapping gas. But composting turns food waste into a rich fertilizer popular with gardeners.

A book on climate solutions (Price: $$)

Why it’s climate friendly: The topic of climate change can make people sad, scared, and outraged, and so it’s important to remember that many people are working hard to fix the problem. Help your network members better understand the possible solutions with a selection from this list by Michael Svoboda, Yale Climate Connections contributor.

Bonus Recommendation: “The Nature of Oaks,” by Douglas W. Tallamy

A sweater, slippers, socks or a blanket (Price: $$)

Why it’s eco-friendly: Nestled inside a cozy fabric, your loved ones will stay warm even if they turn down the thermostat. Not only will they reduce carbon pollution, but they will save money on home heating costs, which are expected to skyrocket this winter.

A bike (Price: $$$)

Why it’s climate friendly: Transportation is the biggest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Replacing gas-guzzling car trips with a ride on two wheels can help. If you can afford it, consider an electric bike for the rider in your life. According to recent research, urban e-bike owners tend to use them as a replacement for car trips.

Readers, what other climate-friendly gifts should I add to this list? Send your suggestions to sara@yaleclimateconnections.org.

Bonus tip: To avoid creating mountains of wrapping paper waste, present your gifts in reusable paper or fabric gift bags – then, like the women in this Saturday Night Live skit, make sure they do. get used to it year after year.

Jennifer Marlon contributed.

A question about climate change? Send it to sara@yaleclimateconnections.org. Questions can be edited for length and clarity.

Highlights

  • The bursting of the firecracker results in smoke and dust in the air which acts as an air pollution aggregator.

  • Firecrackers are made of toxic products containing substances that are harmful and dangerous to human health and the planet

  • Another simple way to counter global warming is to plant more trees.

New Delhi: The UN climate summit COP26 is underway in Glasgow, Scotland, where several major agreements are being signed by world leaders for a better future. Certain phenomena such as changing extreme weather patterns, increasing droughts, melting glaciers, shrinking sea ice, rising temperatures and climate change have raised alarm bells over the years about how we live and lead our lives.

If you are not concerned about all these great factors affecting our Mother Earth, you can certainly contribute this Diwali to help heal Mother Nature.

As the country celebrates Diwali today, everyone is getting ready to put lights on the walls, make rangoli, decorate the house and send gifts. To make it even better, it would be a good idea if we make it more eco-friendly.

If you’re looking for Diwali gifts, here are some ideas for celebrating and sending eco-friendly gifts that will help create a better tomorrow:

One of the easiest ways to fight climate change is to plant more trees. Another thoughtful gesture on this Diwali to make Mother Nature more sustainable for future generations is to build a healthier planet. The easiest way you can find is to plant trees. You might even gift someone a plant that will help heal the planet in the long run.

To create a sustainable and healthier planet, you can choose handcrafted gifts. Apart from this, with this initiative, you can also help the communities of artisans, weavers, craftsmen and potters by buying gifts which will increase their income and they will also have a happier Diwali. Pottery, vases, coasters, incense holders, bowls and trays are some examples you can choose from.

Nothing better than upcycling because it’s easier on your pockets too. You can send your loved ones charming recycled home decor crafts that are also environmentally friendly, such as painted mason jar sconce vases, recycled galvanized metal welcome sconces, old hardcover books turned into a picture frame, a decorative votive holder made from old keys and a decorative upside down wall hanging.

  • Say no to plastics

A big part of a healthier planet is made up of sustainable businesses so you can choose products and their packaging that is not plastic as it is a threat to our environment as a single plastic bag puts up to 1000 years to decompose.

This Diwali, you can avoid sky lanterns as they are made of bamboo or wrapped wire are not eco-friendly. You can share a gift of biodegradable lanterns as they are made of materials like bamboo instead of wire.

  • Send organic gifts to your loved ones

You can surprise your friends and family members with organic treats this Diwali season, such as therapeutic perfumes and body products. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, to boost the immunity of your loved ones, you can also send organic foods for immunity and good health.

Handmade diyas are perfect for people looking for an economical option. You can decorate and light up your home with handmade diyas as they are eco-friendly. According to environmentalists, if you throw it away after using it, it will naturally degrade.

Narratio Vitae is a family history business owned by former Central Intelligence Agency analyst Lisa Maddox. Its research goes more in depth than a standard DNA test and may focus on a specific branch or individual within your loved one’s lineage.

“The end product is a private, personalized website that contains stories from the life of the client’s ancestors, including historical background, photos, documents and even audio or video clips of family talks,” Maddox said. .

Unlike a photo album or book, Narratio Vitae’s websites are 100 percent paperless and can be shared with a relative who lives across town or across the globe. A blog feature allows family and friends to post comments and start meaningful family discussions that can be shared with future generations. It is the gift that keeps on giving.

The price varies depending on the scope of the project. To learn more, visit narratiovitae.com.

Gift cards can be redeemed online or in person at the foundation’s counter at 1 Cameron Street, West said. Right now, tickets are available for tours and cruises scheduled for March 9 or later, according to West. Once the schedule goes live for January and February, tickets for those months will also be available.

Print the gift cards and stuff them in your family’s bottoms or choose the zero waste option and email them.

The ship uses very little energy. During tours, the only energy used is electricity to keep the lights on. During cruises, wind and sail are used to propel the ship as much as possible.
