Adeina Anderson of Creative Lifestyles With Adeina joined Steph and Rosie to share some holiday safety tips and budget-friendly gift ideas.

Holiday Safety Travel Tips

  1. My biggest tip for vacation travel is to always have a black tablecloth with you. It serves several purposes. You can hide things in the back by draping the tablecloth over the objects, that way when someone looks into your vehicle they only see the black tablecloth, or nothing at all as it blends in. It’s also great to have in case it gets cold, you can use it as a blanket.
  2. Another vacation safety travel tip I have is to always have a warm coat and a warm hat in your vehicle, such as Gobi heated clothing. Also, always keep a first aid kit and good boots in your vehicle.
  3. Finally, always make sure your vehicle is in top condition, check all your fluids. If you live in an area prone to frost, make sure you have windshield washer fluid that won’t freeze. Check your tire pressure and make sure your battery is in good condition.

Hi Sara!

I’m trying to find a gift for my mom for Christmas, and I love the idea of giving a gift for climate action. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you for your time

– Laura

Hi Laura,

Sure thing. Here is a list of ecological gift ideas for all budgets.

A board game, puzzle, houseplant, or other item from your local “Don’t Buy Anything” group (Price: free)

Why is it climate friendly: Manufacturing products requires consumption of energy and natural resources, so it is better for the climate to reuse the products rather than buy new ones. The Buy Nothing Project, a gift network created by two women in Washington state in 2013, encourages neighbors to freely share goods and services with each other. The project’s “Holiday Challenge” encourages participants to donate (and request) used items that can be reused as gifts. To join, download the free group app or search for a group near you on Facebook.

Another option: a treasure from your local thrift store

A “voucher” promising to help the beneficiary take climate action (Price: free)

Why it’s climate friendly: With a voucher, you are giving a gift of your time. You can promise to write letters to elected officials on behalf of the recipient, teach them about plant-based cooking, or help the recipient install weather stripping. The voucher is tailored to the recipient’s interests and your skills, making it a one-of-a-kind gift.

Renewable energy credits (Price: $)

Why they’re climate-friendly: About a quarter of carbon pollution in the United States comes from power plants that burn natural gas and coal to generate electricity. With renewable energy credits, you can offer your loved ones electricity produced from wind, solar or other renewable sources. For about $ 5 per month, your friends or family members will be entitled to call themselves “100% powered by clean electricity”.

Where to buy: through services such as Arcadia Power or other groups certified by the non-profit group Green-e

Caveat: As David Roberts explains in this Vox column, it’s not clear that renewable energy credits create incentives for additional renewable energy facilities to come online. Yet purchasing credits helps demonstrate demand for clean electrical products.

Kit Narcissus Paperwhite (Price: $)

Why they’re climate-friendly: Your friends and family will feel connected to nature even in winter when they grow these fragrant indoor flowers. To make white paper narcissus kits, purchase inexpensive light bulbs at a hardware store or garden center, salvaged glass vases or jars, and small pebbles. Recipients will place the bulbs on the pebbles inside the vases, add water, then wait four to six weeks for the flowers to emerge.

Climate disaster pack (Price: $)

Why It’s Climate Friendly: This 30-card expansion of the popular ‘Cards Against Humanity’ game is sure to get your friends talking about climate change. As I explained, most people don’t have enough conversations about the problem.

Bonus: The creator of the game is offering a discount if you live in an area that is on track to experience heat waves, hurricanes, droughts, downpours or rising seas.

Compost bucket (Price: $$)

Why it’s climate friendly: The perfect gift for the person with a green thumb. Inside landfills, decomposing food scraps release methane, a powerful heat-trapping gas. But composting turns food waste into a rich fertilizer popular with gardeners.

A book on climate solutions (Price: $$)

Why it’s climate friendly: The topic of climate change can make people sad, scared, and outraged, and so it’s important to remember that many people are working hard to fix the problem. Help your network members better understand the possible solutions with a selection from this list by Michael Svoboda, Yale Climate Connections contributor.

Bonus Recommendation: “The Nature of Oaks,” by Douglas W. Tallamy

A sweater, slippers, socks or a blanket (Price: $$)

Why it’s eco-friendly: Nestled inside a cozy fabric, your loved ones will stay warm even if they turn down the thermostat. Not only will they reduce carbon pollution, but they will save money on home heating costs, which are expected to skyrocket this winter.

A bike (Price: $$$)

Why it’s climate friendly: Transportation is the biggest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Replacing gas-guzzling car trips with a ride on two wheels can help. If you can afford it, consider an electric bike for the rider in your life. According to recent research, urban e-bike owners tend to use them as a replacement for car trips.

Readers, what other climate-friendly gifts should I add to this list? Send your suggestions to sara@yaleclimateconnections.org.

Bonus tip: To avoid creating mountains of wrapping paper waste, present your gifts in reusable paper or fabric gift bags – then, like the women in this Saturday Night Live skit, make sure they do. get used to it year after year.

Governments around the world have recently agreed on emission cuts to slow the impact of climate change. There are also ways for people to share the effort at home.

When it comes to buying and using electronics, a helpful adage from fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has stuck with me: “Buy less, choose wisely, and make it last.”

Taken to the extreme, this could mean not buying new products. According to Apple’s Environmental Report, 81% of the iPhone 13’s lifecycle carbon emissions occur during the device’s production. When you give gifts, you can get refurbished devices or protective accessories that help your loved ones keep their current models longer, such as an Otterbox Defender Series rugged case or a tempered glass screen protector amFilm.

You could avoid buying physical items altogether. Netflix and Spotify gift cards can be applied to subscriptions, while Apple gift cards can be applied to a variety of services in the company’s ecosystem, from iCloud storage to in-store repairs.

If you want to buy something shiny and new, here are some awesome gadgets and accessories that aren’t just greenwashing and are made with sustainability and climate friendliness in mind.

The Wall Street Journal is not compensated by brands or retailers to be listed in this guide.

Eve Energy

Eve Energy

If you’ve ever wondered if some of your electronics are energy vampires — devices that draw electricity even when turned off — this smart plug can tell you. Eve’s app can also estimate how much your appliances will cost you annually, based on current electricity rates. You can control the outlet and set schedules via the Eve or Home iOS apps as well as Siri. For out-of-home control, you’ll need an iPad, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K to act as a hub. It’s a giveaway for someone steeped in the Apple ecosystem – there’s no Alexa or Google Assistant support. $40; evehome.com

Specialized Turbo Vado SL

The transportation sector is the largest US emitter of greenhouse gases. And cars — you know, the ones we constantly drive to the grocery store and back — produce more than half of those emissions. An e-bike can help reduce personal consumption of fossil fuels. Specialized’s Turbo Vado SL 4.0 EQ is lightweight at 33 pounds and doesn’t skimp on speed, providing support up to 28 miles per hour thanks to its natural-feeling mid-drive motor. And it has commuter-friendly features like built-in lights and a rear rack for cargo. $3,750; specialise.com

Amazon

Amazon Smart Thermostat

Amazonit’s

latest gadget is a smart thermostat with a simple three-button display. It uses information from Echo smart speakers and other connected devices, such as smart lights and your phone, to determine if you’re away or sleeping, adjusting the temperature accordingly. When you manually adjust your heating or cooling, a small green tree icon will appear, indicating energy-efficient temperature choices. You can track your energy usage and control temperatures remotely using the Alexa app. Amazon’s version lacks the sleek interface of Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat, but it costs a lot less. This is a great smart thermostat at a fantastic price. Just be sure to use the compatibility checker before purchasing. $60; amazon.com

Grouphug Solar Panel Charger

Most electricity in the United States is generated by fossil fuels, although some providers allow residential customers to purchase their electricity from renewable sources. People who don’t have the option or ability to install rooftop solar panels can still charge some of their small electronics using this window hanging solar frame. A 10 watt panel absorbs the sun’s rays and stores energy in a battery. When the LED light is green, you can start powering your gadgets. It’s not big enough to power a laptop or even fully charge a smartphone (especially on cloudy days), but it will charge an Apple Watch and other small gadgets. $149; grouphugtech.com

What eco-responsible gifts are on your list this year? Join the conversation below.

Nutr 2.0 Nut-Milk Maker

Cows produce the most greenhouse gas emissions in the livestock sector, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. For those concerned about sustainability, dairy alternatives can be expensive and full of extra additives. This gadget showed me how easy it is to make your own. It takes about five minutes to pulverize the two tablespoons of nuts and water needed to produce about one and a half cups of “milk.” I like to use the Nutr’s delayed start feature to soak nuts overnight for a creamier texture, and its hot mode to turn lattes. It’s also an effective morning alarm – this thing is loud. $169; thenutr.com

Garmin

Garmin Tacx Neo 2T Smart Trainer

Unlike other on-the-go trainers, Garminit’s

the model does not need to be connected to a power source. The Neo 2T harnesses the power of your legs to transmit data about your power and speed, and automatically adjusts resistance while using training apps like Zwift. When there is a hill on the screen, it becomes more difficult to pedal, and if the course has a cobblestone or dirt road, the trainer can also simulate this feeling. It’s one of the quietest trainers I’ve tested, at least when I’m not hurtling down a cobblestone driveway. $1,399; garmin.com

Microsoft

Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse

This cute wireless device is what I wish the future of gadgets were: made of plastic waste recovered from oceans and other waterways, and packaged in 100% recyclable packaging. This one contains only 20% recycled ocean plastic. I would like to see one done with more. “As we move forward with this new manufacturing process, we hope to see this number increase,” a Microsoft spokeswoman said. The Bluetooth mouse is comfortable but compact, and probably better suited to smaller hands. Although the mouse’s easy-to-connect Swift Pair function only works with Windows PCs, you can use its basic functions with Macs and Chromebooks. $25; microsoft.com

Photo:

Incipio

Incipio Organicore phone case

Incipio’s Organicore line has all the elements of a good phone case. It covers the device on all sides and features raised edges around the screen and camera lenses. Plus, the power and volume buttons are easy to press. The bonus is that it’s made from plants and helps keep plastic out of oceans and landfills. The transparent version has better drop protection, rated up to 14 feet, compared to the 8 feet of drop protection of the cheaper Organicore model. Just be careful if you’re using MagSafe accessories, as they don’t always stick as securely as Apple’s official cases. $45; incipio.com

Photo:

pop socket

PopSocket Plant-Based PopGrip

PopSocket’s latest phone holder/stand combo follows a similar trend. It is composed of 35% organic matter. (The company is also working on converting the stand, which is plastic, into plants.) These grips help in other ways: By making your phone easier to fold, it’s less likely you’ll drop it and you need excessive repairs or replacements. . The top detaches so you can charge your phone wirelessly. $15; popsockets.com

Photo:

Vitamix

Vitamix FC-50 Food Cycler

Composting helps keep food scraps out of landfills and produces soil-enriching fertilizer for plants. This electric food waste processor is for those who don’t have a local compost collection service or can’t be bothered with a garden bin. About the size of a small trash can, it takes eggshells, avocado peels, coffee grounds, and other dinner leftovers in a bucket with an odor-eliminating charcoal filter lid. When the bucket is full, you turn it on to start the drying, grinding and cooling process. Keep in mind that citrus peels, beet peels, and other high-sugar fruits can stick to the bucket’s heating element. $400; vitamix.com

A “green” Black Friday is not just about deals and profits. Eco-friendly shopping may only make a small dent in consumerism, but it’s an enduring trend that grows with each holiday season, especially as younger generations grow.

Smart retailers know a hook when they see one, and the “green” deals on offer this Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and throughout the days and weeks ahead have expanded to more price ranges, and include sustainable alternatives to traditional gifts from perfume tools to sweaters. Additionally, gift lists may increasingly include requests for service or donations in addition to “stuff”.

Year-round shifts in climate-conscious shopping aren’t expected to go away during the holiday rush. A BCG study found that 38% of consumers switched from their favorite clothing brand this year to one that has better environmental and social practices. This data also revealed that lifestyle changes, such as opting for electric vehicles, requiring sustainable packaging or less, and prioritizing digitalization to save paper and plastic, will increase among consumers over the course of the year. coming year and beyond.

Remember, according to the Stanford University Recycling Center, Americans create 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and Christmas than at any other time of year, totaling 25 million tons of extra trash.

Here are some green gift ideas this year, including special offers and industry advice on environmental counterfeits:

Energy saving tools

Greenworks will take an extra 35% off its range of outdoor power tools, thanks to an agreement with 9to5toys.com. In addition to its signature electric mowers, the savings will extend to leaf blowers, snow blowers, pressure washers and more for households looking to ditch the RB00 gasoline,
+1.99%
and CL00 oil,
+1.90%
throughout their tool shed. The Greenworks 48V 20 inch Electric Lawn Mower is priced at $338down $520.

Solar for all those gadgets

Discounted at $179 for Black Friday deals, the Jackery Explorer 240 Portable Power Station can power an iPhone, laptop, and lighting setup while camping or during a power outage. The lightweight Explorer 240 has a sturdy handle for easy carrying and offers a simple push-button start for easy operation, Electrek reviewers say. The Explorer 240 also features an integrated Maximum Power Point Tracking, or MPPT, controller for improved efficiency. You can add eco-friendly solar charging with the SolarSaga 60W solar panel (sold separately).

Cricerie

“You buy, we give”

A sensible donation can emphasize the social conscience of the companies you buy from. Keen Footwear, known largely for kitting out hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts, has launched a “You buy, we give” initiative as part of their Green Friday shopping weekend. They will donate a portion of sales to ForestSeeders for every shoe sold.

Several retailers are making additional donations as part of the holiday shopping season. Check them.

Soft sweaters, lightly worn

Patagonia sells sweaters made from pre-consumer cashmere scraps collected from factories in Europe. Her recycled cashmere crewneck sweater is $199.

Not settled on a sweater? Try the retailer’s Worn Wear program, which allows shoppers to purchase gently used pieces, from clothing to gear.

Patagonia

Premium coffee, recycled pods

Nespresso, the alternative to homemade coffee pods, with a robust recycling program, is offering 25% off select machines on Black Friday. It also offers discounts on its limited-edition coffee.

Does this pod system, which can also brew regular and decaffeinated coffee, beat a traditional espresso machine? Reviewers like to say “Nespresso is worth it” because of its combination of ease and consistency.

Perfume and cologne: Beware of “natural”

“Natural” ingredients are often associated with respect for the environment, but beware the buyer. “Natural products are not necessarily sustainable and they are often more allergenic. A perfume should contain a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients,” a perfume expert told Elle Magazine in a preview of perfumes for the holidays. Keep in mind that synthetics are created in the lab and do not include materials of animal origin. This means they can provide cruelty-free alternatives and reduce overexploitation in our natural world.

A suggestion for a scented gift is Clean Reserve, found at Dossier, Sephora and elsewhere. The fragrance maker has partnerships that help support small farming communities that harvest their ingredients ethically. They use a 100% recycled box and wooden cap.

Meanwhile, upcycled fragrances are the latest trend disrupting the sustainable fragrance arena, according to Elle. Remember that the line between awful smells and wonderful smells in the world of perfume is a matter of chemistry. Tantrum, a fragrance from Boy Smells, is made by distilling essential oils from by-products of the furniture-making industry and turning them into this “fiery peppery green scent,” says Elle’s reviewer.

Or consider beauty retailer Lush and its packaging-free approach. Lush, for example, sells a long-lasting perfume in balm form.

The “greenest” of green gift cards?

Gift cards are increasingly popular and are a good way to ensure that the recipient actually uses the final product. Card giving is also said to be on the rise due to supply chain shortages. But are cards the greenest way to give a gift? Most physical gift cards are made from PVC, which can be recycled, but not usually through your home recycling service.

You can mail used gift cards to a specialist recycler or see if your local store has a gift card drop-off point (they sometimes collect them to send to recyclers in batches, as it’s a lot greener than sending a gift card in the mail), says the Kroger grocer, in a blog post.

Some brands are also starting to use more sustainable materials for gift cards, such as biodegradable paper or wood, which can go into curbside recycling or the backyard composter. You can also buy fully digital e-gift cards, which means there’s no waste.

Real reusable packaging

Take this tip from Japan. Try a pretty fabric or tea towel to wrap a gift, and the recipient can reuse it, either at home or for a future gift. Use any fabric you like or try Anthropologie’s Furoshiki Reusable Gift Wrapping Cloth.

Durable side-by-side browser extension

A new browser extension called Beagle aims to help shoppers directly compare “sustainable” recommendations and other alternatives alongside most searched products online.

Beagle uses “a mix of artificial intelligence and language recognition algorithms” to match users with a nearby product alternative.

To use it, install Beagle, press its extension button while browsing a retail site. The information may include an alternative product or compare the retailer’s green credentials.

The onslaught of rushed shoppers spending a pile of their hard-earned cash on unnecessary gifts that are invariably wrapped in single-use plastic is about to ensue.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Check out my top ten gift ideas that are both easy on your wallet and easy on the planet.

This world famous charity has cleverly spread the word to donate to someone in need. You can tell your loved one where they’ve been and make them feel hot and confused knowing that you’re really helping someone, rather than buying something unnecessary that will almost certainly end up in their garage sale or on. Trade Me regarding cleaning up next spring.

Oxfam has also jumped on the donation as a gift train, as has World Vision as they realize that sometimes buying something useful for someone in need is a great and pragmatic gift.

Thirteen of our towns and cities have physical Trade-Aid stores and they also have a convenient online store. What I like is that the smiling youngster behind the counter is usually a volunteer. This Kiwi charity is made up of pioneers who have directly improved living conditions in developing countries.

Their selection of gifts is fantastic and they have a wonderful range of children’s toys and women’s jewelry.

THREE: recycling, reuse or re-gift

Making something out of trash is a thoughtful way to add value with a physical gift that will make your wallet happy too.

If you can find a companion with a tile cutter, then you can reuse a used wine bottle in a self-watering herb planter (another bonus: you get to enjoy the wine first).

One person’s garbage can be another’s treasure if you’re smart – check out the incredible selection of upcycled jewelry here, or gift to a smart person, Sherri Haab wrote a book that – in the hands of the right fit – turns garbage cleaning into a cushy little number.

Re-gifting is often frowned upon, but if it’s done right (i.e. you don’t accidentally return a personalized gift to the person who bought it for you) then you both benefit from your wallet and recipient. Just make sure you’re not using the receiver as an outlet for the waste that they’ll end up having to administer (that’s what Trade Me is for).

FOUR: Reusable containers

On average, we kiwis use 168 plastic drink bottles each year and only 24% of them are recycled.

Several thousand of them pollute the beaches that you will probably want to visit this summer.

Cut this threat from the lives of your loved ones by buying them a good reusable drink bottle. They’ll be sure to thank you on the trail, as most people find it makes them drink more water, which means fewer headaches, better health, and less hangovers.

There are some cool ones for sale that also support charity at www.sustainablecoastlines.org – they make little ones that are great for kids too.

For those who enjoy take-out coffee, get them a reusable coffee mug like these ideal mugs made right here in Aotearoa. Not only are they 100% reusable and 100% recyclable, but they are also BPA free.

Many cafes offer discounts for those who bring their own cup to go. Conscious Consumers has a list of some of your local cafes offering this here.

FIVE: The living donation

One of the best gifts – which keeps on giving – is a perennial tree, plant, or flowers.

In fact, once on my mom’s birthday, with only $ 8 to spend, I knocked out a neglected planter right outside her bedroom window, put some pretty flowers in the bargain bin, and lied there. woke up with a cup of tea and improved eyesight. . It was a success.

Taupo Native Plant Nursery has an epic selection, but make sure the recipient has the right kind of soil before purchasing them a tree that will grow massive and cause problems on the trail. There are loads of other nurseries around with beautiful shrubs, houseplants and flowers too.

SIX: Reusable product bags

While many of us already have reusable grocery bags, these are for your fresh produce (fruits and vegetables). Now you don’t have to unload loose kumaras and apples at the crate while everyone is watching in bewilderment.

The best thing is that the extra weight of the cotton bag is pre-entered at checkout by participating retailers, so it doesn’t cost you anything extra.

Did you know that almost half of the waste produced by households could be composted? The smart buggers at Hungry Bins have revolutionized composting by creating a system that is simple, clean and doesn’t smell bad.

Stop throwing your food waste in the trash and start feeding your garden. If you don’t have a garden, there are plenty of people around you who will happily take your precious worm pee that you can do with these – you can even swap it for something like delicious homemade strawberries that your waste helped grow.

For those looking to treat someone a little bit of luxury, Ecoya natural candles last longer and burn cleaner than the normal paraffin types that typically adorn your Christmas table.

They also smell so good that they will be the greatest pleasure for anyone who is lucky enough to have one.

The hostess has an Ecoya travel candle at the back of the linen closet so the towels and linens always smell divine. Because he doesn’t get burned, he lasted well over a year and is still going strong.

Now, this one is literally ready to go – and you sure don’t want to try to wrap it up.

Give someone years of delicious homemade honey and a natural way to spruce up the rest of their garden. Having bees can increase the fruit and veg in a garden by 50% and we owe these little workhorses a boost – without bees we would lose access to over 70% of the food. that we produce today. Buy one on Trade Me or at Beezthings in Auckland.

* This gift is obviously not for everyone. Keeping bees takes a lot of knowledge and time, if your recipient doesn’t have both, choose one of the other options! Click here for more information on beekeeping in New Zealand.

Ever since I went to the University of Otago, I have been a fan of house beer. Obviously not for kids, but give your dad (or brother or uncle) a homemade infusion kit and you might just bring tears to his eyes with your thoughtfulness.

Few things give a man more satisfaction than mastering the art of making his own beer and very little waste is produced in the process as you can reuse all the old crate bottles that collect dust under the house. .

For all of those freebies, instead of buying new wrapping paper, you can reuse stuff from last year (like my mom does) or even use an old newspaper instead. Get the kids involved and have them make potato stamps to decorate the paper – a great school vacation exercise.

Buying birthday gifts can be a fun experience when trying to find the “perfect” gift for your loved one. You may have already factored in their likes and dislikes. Another important factor is your loved one’s asthma.

Don’t feel like buying another generic gift card? Instead, consider the following ideas to help you choose the right gift for your loved one on their special day.

When you have asthma, it’s essential to avoid your triggers as much as possible. These can include mites, pollen, scents, animal dander, etc.

Regular and thorough cleaning is an essential part of asthma care. But keeping your home completely free from triggers can be difficult. You can help your loved one with one of the following gift ideas:

  • a home weather station to predict asthma triggers, such as storms, temperature changes, and humidity levels
  • a one-off or multi-use deep cleaning service
  • high-quality cotton sheets and blankets (wool and synthetics can trigger symptoms of asthma and eczema)
  • washable masks to wear during allergy and flu season
  • a dehumidifier or humidifier to help control humidity in the air that varies seasonally
  • a hygrometer to measure the humidity level at home
  • anti-dust mite coverings for mattresses and pillows
  • a high quality vacuum cleaner with a special high efficiency air filter (HEPA) to trap allergens
  • a home spirometry test or peak flow meter, which can help your loved one keep an eye on their lung function between doctor visits

Stress can affect our health in several ways. It carries even more risks for people with asthma because it increases their risk of flare-ups.

If your loved one has expressed an interest in more personal care, they might appreciate the following gifts:

  • a massage reservation
  • a hand-held massage tool
  • a spa gift certificate or a getaway
  • a steam bath
  • a yoga class package
  • yoga equipment, such as a mat, bolster, or blocks
  • books or a gift card to a favorite bookstore
  • flameless candles
  • coloring books or other art supplies
  • newspapers and stationery

Giving gifts often involves tangible items, but entertainment is a great option.

A good book or movie can be especially helpful during allergy season or the cold, dry months, any time your loved one may need to stay more indoors to avoid possible asthma flare-ups.

Consider these entertainment ideas as a starting point:

  • a gift subscription to a video streaming service
  • board games
  • game consoles
  • e-books or paper
  • an e-reader
  • a gift certificate for a dinner at a favorite restaurant
  • a cinema gift voucher
  • a gift certificate to a local theater or museum
  • cookbooks or cooking utensils (foods are not always the best choice, in case of food allergies)

Gift cards often have a bad reputation for being thoughtless. But giving a gift card guarantees that your loved one can get what they want and avoid their asthma triggers.

The key to the right gift card is finding one that is thoughtful and tailored to your loved one’s interests. Gift cards for theaters, spas, or restaurants can be good choices.

A gift certificate at a clothing store can be risky, unless you are sure your loved one is definitely shopping there.

Just as important as giving the right gift to a loved one with asthma is knowing what to avoid. Although the specific asthma triggers vary, here are some general things to avoid:

  • scented candles
  • bath or body care items, including soaps, lotions, and perfumes
  • plants or flowers
  • specialty foods, unless you know your loved one is not allergic to a specific item
  • stuffed animals and knick-knacks that tend to collect dust
  • pot pourri
  • costume jewelry, which tends to contain nickel and can cause an allergic reaction
  • clothes, especially if your loved one also has eczema
  • pets of all kinds

Giving gifts to a friend or relative with asthma doesn’t have to be stressful. Knowing your loved one’s asthma triggers is the first step in finding a gift that is both useful and appreciated.

If you aren’t sure if a gift is appropriate, don’t be afraid to ask. Your loved one will likely appreciate the thoughtfulness. And don’t forget that they will appreciate your care and effort no matter what you choose.
