The video game company that is challenging some of the biggest tech companies in the world is buying the music company that wants to challenge the dominant tech business model in this industry.

Epic Games Inc. announced on Wednesday that it is buying Bandcamp, an online music store that allows musicians to create their own storefront and keep more of the proceeds from sales than streaming services such as Spotify Inc. SPOT ,
-0.89%
It’s an interesting fit, as Epic challenged the dominant business model in its industry by suing Apple Inc. AAPL,
+2.11%
and Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL,
+0.44%
GOOG,
+0.63%
Google, claiming they are using monopoly power to illegally control the mobile gaming industry.

“Fair and open platforms are essential for the future of the creator economy,” an unattributed Epic blog post bed. “Epic and Bandcamp share a mission to create the most artist-friendly platform that allows creators to keep the majority of their hard-earned money.”

Bandcamp, founded in 2008, allows artists to sell digital music as well as physical goods such as records and merchandise, and takes 15% of the total, with artists also responsible for payment processing fees. The Oakland, California-based company says the result is that 82% of all money spent on its site goes directly to the artist, with that total approaching $1 billion over the life of the site, according to a Wednesday blog post from Managing Director Ethan Diamond.

“While over the years we’ve heard from other companies who wanted us to join them, we always thought it would only be exciting if they believed strongly in our mission, were aligned with our values and only wanted not just to see Bandcamp continue, but also wanted to provide the resources to bring much more benefit to the artists, labels and fans who use the site,” Diamond wrote. “Epic ticks all of those boxes.”

Epic Games has remained private despite its huge success with “Fortnite,” a video game focused on an online “Battle Royale” format that has won fans and spawned imitators. The company has, however, welcomed outside investment, including from Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. 700,
-1.76%,
which has its own NYSE-listed music streaming subsidiary, Tencent Music Entertainment Group TME,
-0.85%,
as well as investments in Spotify and music labels including Warner Music Group Corp. WMG,
+0.56%

Diamond said Bandcamp would continue to operate independently and promised that the core service would not change, specifically highlighting the control and distribution of revenue artists receive as well as Bandcamp Fridays, when the service gives up its share of income on the first Friday of each month. He said the Epic deal will help the company expand internationally and shore up new endeavors like vinyl pressing for artists and its own streaming app.

Arceus reveals how Pokémon went from fearsome to friendly https://frendlypresents.com/arceus-reveals-how-pokemon-went-from-fearsome-to-friendly/ Sat, 12 Feb 2022 08:00:00 +0000 https://frendlypresents.com/arceus-reveals-how-pokemon-went-from-fearsome-to-friendly/ Before Legends: Arceus, Pokémon were generally viewed as wild and dangerous creatures, but that sentiment changes as the game progresses. Before Legends: Arceus, Pokémon were generally viewed as wild and dangerous creatures, but that sentiment changes as the game progresses.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus taking place in the former region of Hisui gives it a perspective unique to the franchise, where the eponymous creatures aren’t part of everyday life like they are in the main games. Hisui’s fledgling communities, including Pokemon Legends: Arceus‘ Jubilife Village, live in a region dominated by Pokémon that are still mostly perceived as hostile and extremely dangerous. This begins to change over the course of the game largely due to player actions, and many begin to overcome their fears and see the value in co-existing with Pokémon.

It is understandable that the people of Pokemon the universe would be afraid of creatures. Some are capable of tremendous feats (exceptional examples even include the creation of time and space), and all have power virtually unknowable before their careful study for the advent of a Pokédex. Pokemon Legends: Arceus is uniquely positioned to explore how these feelings evolve, set in a time when Poké Balls are a new invention and finding Pokémon is a top priority for Hisui.

As players begin their journey to discover all the Pokémon in Legends: Arceus‘ Pokédex, they also begin a journey to show the camaraderie possible between humans and Pokémon. The player’s ability to catch three Pokémon in quick succession during the game’s tutorial is seen as an incredible feat. Catching Pokemon isn’t a common skill yet, which means very few members of the Galaxy Expedition team have much experience with tame ones.

Pokémon just become companions in Legends: Arceus

"Annoying Bidoof" is a surprisingly difficult request, as Bidoofs can be hard to find

Being able to catch Pokemon is a major step in losing some of their threatening perception to creatures. The next big step is for people to start seeing them as helpful companions, which is a process. Legends: Arceus shows frequently. Even some of the game’s early side quests depict the citizens of Jubilife realizing that Pokemon can be more than wild animals. Three miserable Bidoofs cause a practical emergency when they walk past members of the Security Corps and hide in the village. Once they have been gathered and caught, the questgiver wants to send them back into the wild and are only stopped by a construction body hoping to put the Bidoofs to good use.

The Pokédex main quest gives Legends: Arceus players a real reason to catch all of Hisui’s species, but the game as a whole is very much about integrating Pokémon into human society. Some side quests are simply to complete Pokédex entries, which is a much more complicated task than in previous games. While this is just a way to reward players for going the extra mile, it does imply a general curiosity among Galaxy Expedition team members for Pokémon. The creatures are magical and fun to discover, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus leans into the wonderment that has captivated so many fans of the series as a central narrative device.

People of all ages can access the internet more easily than ever these days, so it’s no surprise that major websites like YouTube and Tic attract a lot of young users. Kids love browsing websites like these as much as adults, but the age difference comes with a lot of complications. Parents, content creators and website moderators all have their own concerns about what kids might find on a site like Twitch, as evidenced by Twitch’s attempts to limit content like hot tub streams. these last years. It also inspired Pokimane to come up with a Twitch filter specifically for younger internet users.

GAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

During a recent stream, Pokimane chatted with his viewers about young Twitch users and suggested that the streaming platform should introduce a special content roster similar to YouTube Kids. Parents would definitely appreciate having a clear list of family channels that their children can enjoy. If Twitch creates some kind of Twitch Kids subsector of its own, however, viewers won’t be the only ones affected. Streamers, both well-known personalities and newcomers to the children’s entertainment side of YouTube, could flock to family Twitch streaming in hopes of capturing some of the Twitch Kids audience in a new meta of streaming.

Twitch Content for Kids

A Twitch meta focused on catering to younger viewers seems plausible since something similar has happened on YouTube before. Many very young children get their entertainment from YouTubers, whether those YouTube channels focus on unboxing toys, animations featuring Disney characters, or any other type of lighthearted content. Many content creators have flocked to kid-friendly YouTube content because of audience loyalty; Today, some of YouTube’s biggest channels are top-notch YouTube Kids content, like Cocomelon, which has 128 million subscribers. For these channels, children’s entertainment continues to be lucrative.

This success doesn’t have to be exclusive to YouTube. On the contrary, it seems likely that Twitch streamers could emulate many of the kid-friendly entertainments that are making the rounds on YouTube. Whether it’s hosting live concerts, playing family video games, or doing live craft activities that kids can imitate from home, Twitch could provide plenty of engagement for young viewers, especially if channels like these belonged to a special Twitch Kids subcategory that was easy for kids and their parents to find. With a bit of streamlining by Twitch itself, streamers could find success on par with top YouTube Kids channels.

While the stars of a theoretical Twitch Kids would likely be new streamers that cater entirely to younger viewers, more streamers could be trying to break into the category. Kids love coming back to their favorite YouTube channel again and again, which means streamers who qualify for a kid-friendly version of Twitch can attract new, loyal viewers by playing Twitch Kids-approved games and creating content. slightly more docile overall. Twitch Kids could also prove invaluable in helping smaller channels become major successes, connecting new Twitch users with channels that match their interests, should smaller channels lean into the Twitch Kids model.

Of course, at this time, Twitch Kids is just a proposal from Pokimane, and it remains to be seen if Twitch itself is listening or has an established interest in supporting a network of kids’ channels. If Twitch made such an attempt, however, many channels would likely jump on it as an opportunity. Trends on Twitch like the hot tub meta and the TV meta tend to shape content created by even the biggest streamers. Twitch Kids would inevitably encourage a trend toward all-ages content that some streamers might pursue to grow their channels. It will be interesting to see if Tic has something to say about Pokimane’s suggestion.
