The Concacaf and UEFA champions will face off inside Wembley Stadium on Friday in one of the most anticipated women’s football friendlies in some time.

The United States women’s national team is testing itself abroad with a game against England in what could be a preview of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

Vlatko Andonovski’s USWNT have made it through Concacaf qualifying for the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics, and they haven’t lost in 15 matches this year.

England lifted the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 trophy on home soil, and they struggled to qualify for the UEFA World Cup by winning the maximum 30 points from 10 games.

Friday’s showdown should serve as a good yardstick for the national team’s two dominant programs, and if it lives up to expectations, it could create more hype for a possible final between the two teams next summer.

USWNT-England clash could be preview of World Cup final

The draw for the 2023 Women’s World Cup will ultimately decide when the USWNT and the Lionesses face off, if they can, in Australia and New Zealand, but Friday’s game looks like a potential final game.

The USWNT has long been the dominant power in North America, and it rarely gets the chance to prove itself outside of major international competitions against a team like England.

England are fourth in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, three places behind the USA. USWNT friendlies in 2022 have featured Colombia, Nigeria and Uzbekistan. Colombia is the only one of these three teams ranked in the top 25 and they are 25th.

England faced tougher competition throughout the calendar year as they played in and won Euro 2022 and qualified for the World Cup. The Lionesses have played three friendlies in 2022, and all of them were against European teams.

Both teams have been dominant in their own right in their respective competitions this season. The USWNT won the SheBelieves Cup with two wins and a draw and held firm in the Concacaf W tournament, which qualified them for the Women’s World Cup and the Summer Olympics.

The USWNT have conceded two goals in 2022, one in a 9-1 win over Uzbekistan and the other in their last game, a 2-1 win over Nigeria.

The Americans have 10 wins by multiple goals, and they’ve been powered by a large group of scorers, led by Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith. Morgan and Smith combined three of four goals in the first of two friendlies against Nigeria in September.

England are coming off a 10-0 win over Luxembourg and a 2-0 win over Austria at the end of UEFA World Cup qualification. Beth Mead, Ella Toone and Ellen White, who has since retired, combined to score 33 goals in 10 qualifying matches. Mead tied for the top of Group D with 13 goals.

The Lionesses outscored their opponents 80-0 in the World Cup qualifiers, and they conceded just two goals in their Euro title run. Spain and Germany both scored against England and forced extra time. England won both of these knockout matches by a score of 2-1.

It’s as big a clash of superstars as it gets in women’s football in 2022 and the outcome will teach us the strengths and flaws of both sides with the World Cup on the horizon.

It’s been hard for the USWNT and England to spot any faults when they score an abundance of goals and regularly hold clean sheets.

The USWNT will have to challenge the English defense without Alex Morgan. Smith is in the best form of the forwards on the roster. Megan Rapinoe is the only one of the five forwards listed on the list with more than 25 international appearances.

Friday should give the young forwards a chance to show off their skills against top-notch defence, and it could see Rapinoe prove he’s on the World Cup list as one of the most successful players. experienced talent pool.

Lindsey Horan and Rose Lavelle will be vital for the USWNT to dictate the pace of the game, as they usually do, and Becky Sauerbrunn faces a tough task in central defense with some of the best forwards in the world playing against her.

Beth Mead will be the player the US defense will focus on. Mead has 13 goals in 2022, including five in the European title race.

If the American defense contains Mead’s movement in the final third, it will prevent Fran Kirby, Georgia Stanway and others from sliding the ball into the box, and it could force England to try more shots from outside from the surface.

The game could be a low-scoring affair in which a moment of brilliance wins it, or a draw could come out of the contest, but regardless of the outcome, both teams should have a clear understanding of what needs to be fixed before next summer. . .

Prediction: USWNT 1-1 England
